How to Watch Tobias’ Show “Manhunter”

No news yet on when to expect Tobias’ new show MANHUNT where he plays the part of Edward Stanton. This limited series is based on the aftermath of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Here is some news about where you can eventually watch it. I’ll keep you updated on when to expect it.

Manhunt, a Show About the Hunt for Lincoln’s Assassin John Wilkes Booth, Is Coming to Apple TV+

The limited series about the immediate aftermath of Lincoln’s assassination in 1865 is part historical fiction, part conspiracy thriller.

Apple TV+’s newest limited series, Manhunt, will focus on the aftermath of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1865. Described by the streamer as part historical fiction and part conspiracy thriller, Manhunt centers on Lincoln’s war secretary Edwin Stanton who is determined to catch Lincoln’s killer and protect the late-president’s legacy.

Here’s everything we know so far about Manhunt, and how to watch the show.

Tobias Menzies leads the cast.

Menzies, best known for playing Prince Philip in the last two seasons of The Crown and for portraying both Blackjack and Frank Randall in early seasons of Outlander, will star as Lincoln’s war secretary Edwin Stanton. Stanton, a friend of Lincoln’s, organized the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth.

The main cast is rounded out by Irish actor Anthony Boyle, who will portray Booth; Hamish Linklater and Lili Taylor as President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, respectively; Lovie Simone, who will play Mary Simms, a former slave who treats Booth’s broken leg and gives him safe harbor; and Matt Walsh as Dr. Samuel Mudd, a slaveowner.

Other cast includes Brandon Flynn as Stanton’s son Eddie Stanton Jr.; Betty Gabriel as Mary Todd’s friend, fashion designer Elizabeth “Lizzie” Keckley; Will Harrison as Booth’s accomplice David Herold; Damian O’Hare as Stanton’s right-hand man Thomas Eckert; and Patton Oswalt as Detective Lafayette Baker.

Manhunt is based on a book of the same name.

Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase to Catch Lincoln’s Killer Click on Photo to Purchase.

James Swanson’s Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer tells the story of how Lincoln’s assassination set off “the greatest manhunt in American history.” Detailing the events of April 14, 1865 to April 26, 1865, Swanson writes how Stanton “led Union cavalry troops on a wild, 12-day chase from the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia, while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness.”

There’s no premiere date yet.

The limited series will debut on Apple TV+, and we will update as soon as we learn more.

Website Corrections

I’ve been contacted through the website as well as by personal email there is an error in one of the posts I made. In this post: Tobias Attends The Munich Special Screening of “The Edge of War”, I erroenously stated Tobias actually was in Munich attending the event. The title should have been “Tobias Attends The Special Screening of Munich: The Edge of War”. As fluid as websites are, it would be impossible for me to change the original post in any way as it would unlink all the social media accounts the site is attached to. Meaning, all links to that post would be broken and not available via the original posted link. Therefore as an editorial decision and the WEBMASTER of this site, I’ve decided to NOT correct the original post instead opting for this explanation. To the person who keeps contacting me, please stop. I heard you loud and clear and would appreciate your not harping on the error. This is the last that will be said on it. Again, I cannot or will not change the original post as it would screw up the original links posted to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Tobias to Lead “Manhunt”

Various sources are saying Tobias has been cast to star in a new limited series called MANHUNT where he will play the part of EDWARD STANTON. The series is about the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of Abraham Lincoln. Great news for Tobias. More below.

Tobias Menzies Will Star in a New Series About the Hunt For Abraham Lincoln’s Assassin

Menzies will play Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s war secretary who became obsessed with tracking down the president’s killer.

Tobias Menzies will star in a new miniseries about the aftermath of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The actor, best known for playing Prince Philip in the last two seasons of The Crown and both Blackjack and Frank Randall in early seasons of Outlander, will play Edward Stanton in the Apple TV+ series, which is titled Manhunt.

Stanton was Lincoln’s war secretary and close friend. Following the president’s death, per a summary cited by Deadline, Stanton was driven almost mad by his obsession with catching assassin John Wilkes Booth, and his determination to preserve and protect Lincoln’s legacy. The project is described as part historical fiction, part conspiracy thriller, and will be directed by Carl Franklin (Mindhunter).

Deadline also reports that the series will feature a number of Black historical figures who were involved both with the manhunt and with Booth’s escape. These figures include Mary Simms, a former slave who gave Booth safe harbor while he was on the run.

Casting for other roles, including Booth, Simms, and Lincoln, is yet to be announced.

Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, assassinated President Lincoln on the evening of April 14, 1865, just five days after the end of the Civil War. The subsequent manhunt for Booth was one of the largest in history, with some 10,000 federal troops and detectives assigned to search for him. He was finally apprehended in Virginia twelve days after the killing, and killed during a standoff with sergeants.

“The Terror” To Get Home Media Release

Tobias’ series THE TERROR is getting the full court release on home media. According to Horror Cult Films, it is scheduled to be released on 03 May, 2021 on Acorn Media. In all actuality I thought it was already available through Amazon. There’s no word as to whether there will be any extras, but I’ll keep an eye out for that and box art.

Critically-Acclaimed Horror Drama Series THE TERROR To Receive Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Release

Critically-acclaimed horror television series THE TERROR is set to receive Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital release later on this Spring.

Exec-produced by Ridley Scott, horror-period-drama The Terror features a fantastic line-up of British acting greats including BAFTA® winner Jared Harris (Chernobyl, The Crown) and Golden Globe® nominee Tobias Menzies (The Crown, Game of Thrones), as the crew of a real life Royal Naval expedition in 1847 that ventures deep into the Arctic.

Based on Dan Simmons’ best-selling novel, the 10-part series has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, and has been lauded as ‘A fascinating step forward for the survival-horror genre…genius’ (The Atlantic).

1847, the crew of a real life Royal Naval expedition led by three captains, Sir John Franklin (Ciaran Hinds – Game of Thrones, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Francis Crozier (Harris) and James Fitzjames (Menzies), is sent to find the Arctic’s fabled treacherous Northwest Passage, but instead discovers a monstrous polar bear-like predator, a cunning and vicious Gothic horror that stalks the ships in a desperate game of survival.

However, it soon becomes clear that that’s just the beginning of their troubles. As things worsen and civilised behaviour disintegrates in favour of survival at any cost, the crew must simultaneously battle the elements, the supernatural and eventually – themselves. The captains make contact with a mute Inuit woman, Lady Silence (Nive Nielsen – The New World, Togo), who lives as an outcast from her tribe but still follows their old religion…can they trust her to help them, or will she only add to The Terror?

Following its run on BBC Two, this gripping thrille

Album Update & Site Update

I was able to find some new additions to Tobias’ 03/02/2020 – “The Crown” Set Visit album in the gallery. There are twelve new images added. Please feel free to go take a look.

Now about updates to the site. I’ve had to get far more sleep than usual to be able to cope with them. The other issue I’ve been having are computer problems. All-in-all it’s been a pain in the you-know-where as far as trying to figure these things out. They too have added to my migraine pain. So please forgive the lack of updates. I’m trying to organize some things in hopes of getting the rest of Tobias’ THE CROWN done before season two drops in November. The other thing I’m working on is trying to get my first fiction novel written. I’m attempting to try to organize my time a little better to get all these things done. And Update Of Sorts

I know a number of you have been contacting me via this site’s twitter account and via email about updates and such. As many of you might or might not know, I’ve been working on a site dedicated to Tobias’ OUTLANDER co-star Sam Heughan, as well as starting sites for both Duncan Lacroix, and David Berry. I had hoped to get the rest of Tobias work from THE CROWN up before delving into those, but considering the amount of work that is taking, I thought I’d distract myself with getting both David and Duncan up and running. Sorting stills and event images isn’t as hard as doing the screencaps and editing those, so I thought I’d get to work on those and get those done. Now I have, the work now moving forward is in getting the rest of Tobias’ THE CROWN and OUTLANDER done. “My plan” (think of how Caitriona Balfe says that as Claire) is to do quadruple duty in getting Tobias, Sam, Duncan, and David’s work on OUTLANDER done all at once, meaning if say Tobias, Sam, and Duncan are all in the same episode, I’ll be screencapping the entire episode, then multiplying those by four then editing them for the various actor I need them for. That in and of itself is going to be hard slogging. So I’m going to try to get Tobias’ THE CROWN work done ahead of starting the work for OUTLANDER. Wish me luck, and thank you for your patience.

Tobias & Kit Harington For Birth UK

I just came across this and I have to say I’m absolutely gobsmacked. Tobias did a promo for a new French station opening up in Britain called BIRTHUK. What was surprising is how Tobias was acting so smug and he even did a Black Jack nose sneer. I was delighted. However, the fun part of it there was a bartender in the back making Tobias a drink. And the bartender ended up by eing Tobias’ GAME OF THRONES co-star Kit Harington (Jon Snow). Funny Edmure and Jon never met. But this is precious. Here’s the video and a behind-the-scenes shot of both Tobias and Kit.

This Bloody French One Sees Not-So-Humble Tobias Menzies Launch BIRTH UK with Help of Kit Harington

BIRTH UK shares film to mark an important step in the production company’s international expansion

If a French production house is looking to make the official announcement of its UK launch, who better to turn to than a couple of locals? Thanks to the support of Tobias Menzies of ‘The Crown’ and Kit Harington of ‘Game of Thrones’, Paris-based BIRTH found some of the best to break the ice. ‘The Fabulous New Roster of the Bloody French’ introduces BIRTH UK, whose launch marks an important step in the production company’s international expansion, as it also opening an office in Algiers, 2Horloges.

Self-deprecating and slightly absurd, ‘The Fabulous New Roster of the Bloody French’ was created by executive producer Maëva Demurger and director Leo Bill, and came about thanks to a friendship they developed with Tobias working on another project.

When the time came to announce the launch of BIRTH UK – which opened one year ago – the pair wanted to get just the right tone with a distinctly British feel. And how much more British can you get than one of the stars of a series featuring the royal family? The story grew from there.

“As Leo and I developed the idea, we then thought it would be good to have somebody else for Tobias to play off. A crazy notion came to mind: what if we could get Kit Harington? Amazingly, we managed to get in touch, told him about the concept, and to our delight, he loved the idea and was more than happy to come on board,” explains Maëva.

Director Leo Bill said: “Having known Tobias and Kit for some time now, it was amazing to get to work with them on one of my first shoots. They were both very cool and incredibly game to enter my slightly absurdist mind!”

Tobias Menzies Gold Derby Chat

Here is the full Gold Derby chat with Tobias. Honestly it wasn’t long enough and I could listen to Tobias talk about his craft and the inner motivation of his characters all day long and not get tired. Here though he talks mainly about Prince Philip in THE CROWN and what he finds interesting to play about the enigma. In the last moment of the discussion they talk about the lasting impression Tobias has made with his amazing portrayal of Black Jack Randall on OUTLANDER and the meaning of the finale of season one with Black Jack’s rape and torture of Jamie Fraser played by Sam Heughan. I loved this part. While I can say I don’t care for Prince Philip due to his various comments in the past and his questionable conduct, I love when Tobias talks of Black Jack. I just loved what he said about “picking” that lock that was Jamie’s fortress as he mentioned in season two’s La Dame Blanche. I wish sometimes the show wasn’t so quick to do away with Black Jack. I feel the show lost a lot of momentum when he was gone. No other villain has come close to capturing that level of menace that Jack presented in the show. Neither Ed Speleers (Stephen Bonnet) nor the Browns have done that. Tobias set a high bar that has as yet been matched.

“The Crown” – E3X03 Aberfan HD Screencaps

Another episode of THE CROWN. This one is called Aberfan. This episode takes place in 1966 when the town of Aberfan in South Wales experienced a tragedy. With South Wales largely being a mining town, my dad who was born in Princetown, South Wales as a young child went to work with his father in the coal mines. Unfortunately that was more or less the staple of employment in that part of Britain. In October 1966 one of the spoil tips (a repository for waste from a coal mine) liquefied and sent half the mountain down in a black sluice into the town killing 154 people, 115 of which were children in a school. The disaster was amplified by the inaction Queen Elizabeth took getting to the scene of the disaster. While the episode does well to try to portray the Queen (Olivia Coleman) in a sympathetic way, for the most part it is well-known how absent of emotion both she and Philip are. The disaster at Aberfan is considered by Elizabeth as one of her failures as Queen. The other was the death of Princess Diana in how she failed to react sooner. Instead of the usual links to the screencaps in the gallery, I thought I’d include a mini documentary made by Netflix for the series. It’s excellent in encapsulating the disaster and the making of the episode. I will be including the text link though.

Tobias only got a credit for the final episode of THE TERROR. I thought I’d include the opening titles for this post to close out Tobias’ work on the show. The inner historian in my was a bit sad not to see the actual event depicted more as a true telling like the A&E biopic Shackleton starring Sir Kenneth Branagh, but given the high production values and the cast I think I’ll give it a pass on the inclusion of the Tuunbaq. This is what happens when good money is thrown at a production like that of Sir Ridley Scott’s Scott Free and a good story is turned into good drama such as this show. Of course the casting of Jared Harris (Captain Frances Crozier), Ciaran Hinds (Sir John Franlin) and the other actors like the standout Adam Nagaitis who played Cornelius Hickey, Paul Ready (Henry Goodsir), and Nive Nielsen (Lady Silence). The whole production was incredible with the complete recreation of both the HMS Terror and the HMS Erebus. Just amazing. Yesterday I posted an update on the filming of THE CROWN where I said the show had wrapped shooting season four. Update on Updates …. Or The Reason No Posts For A While…. Kinda!

I wanted to let you know why there have been no further updates since the last one on Tobias’ birthday. The reason is after some consideration I’ve decided to start my own site on Tobias’ OUTLANDER co-star Sam Heughan. I know what I said in my Tobias Tribute about there being another site out there for Sam, however, with screencapping Tobias work as Frank and Black Jack Randall for the show, I felt compelled to begin the process of putting together my resources in order to start my own site for Sam. I’ve come to respect and admire Sam’s work as much as I have Tobias’ and so that’s where I’ve been. I’ll be about another few weeks getting some things up in the gallery and on the main pages for the site like I have here on TOBIAS MENZIES ONLINE. I’m hoping you’ll understand as I build that site for Sam. However, if anything does come up on Tobias or his career I’ll definitely be posting hence my previous post about the completion of filming on THE CROWN before this COVID19 crisis. Thank you for your understanding and I’m looking forward to sharing my site on Sam with you. Take care and be safe.

“The Crown” Completes Filming Despite COVID19 Pandemic

It’s been reported, Tobias and his THE CROWN cast members and crew completed filming of season four before the COVID19 pandemic. By the looks of it we might be getting season four on time if the crew can work on the episodes despite the worldwide lockdown.

‘The Crown’ completes filming season four early despite coronavirus

Several movies and television shows have suspended production due to the coronavirus pandemic. The cast and crew of The Crown, which was recently filming season four, was able to complete shooting the latest series of episodes early, giving fans something to look forward to!

The Netflix show has been very busy in the last few weeks filming in various areas in the UK and recreating iconic moments from the Royal Family. In light of COVID-19, production was pushed in an effort to wrap the season earlier, and the hard-working cast and crew were able to finish before they’d anticipated.

“The Crown has completed principal photography on season four, having pulled the final shoot date forward by a few days,” a Netflix spokesperson confirmed to RadioTimes.com on March 18.

There has yet to be a confirmed release date. Reports suggested the new instalment of The Crown would be released this year, possibly in November or December. But that could change in light of COVID-19.

What is certain is fans will see most of The Crown’s season three cast return, including Olivia Colman as the Queen, Tobias Menzies playing Prince Philip, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles and Emerald Fennell portraying Camilla Parker Bowles.

The forthcoming season will also feature Emma Corrin as Princess Diana. Production photos also show that viewers will get to see a young Prince William in the next series!

The fourth season of The Crown will be the show’s penultimate one, ahead of the confirmed fifth and final season.

Creator Peter Morgan previously spoke about his uncertainty about whether the show would continue to present day.

“At the outset, I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons, but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five, it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

Few details have been announced about the last season. The biggest news is that Imelda Staunton has been confirmed to play Queen Elizabeth II. The actress is known for her role as Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films.

As of this writing, the World Health Organization says there have been more than 209,000 cases of coronavirus in 168 countries. Canada has 846 of those cases, according to Health Canada. In the United Kingdom, where The Crown production is mostly based, there are more than 2,630 COVID-19 cases.

Episode four of THE TERROR where Tobias stars as Captain James Fitzjames. There was a bit of an interesting turn here. The character of Cornelius Hickey played incredibly by Adam Nagaitis was Punished As A Boy when he kidnapped Lady Silence/Silna (Nive Nielsen) bringing her back to The Erebus against the orders of Captain Crozier (Jared Harris). The interesting part was that the character of Hickey was caned. I have to wonder if Tobias had any flashbacks to when Black Jack Randall scourged Jamie Fraser played by Sam Heughan in OUTLANDER. By the way, the title of the episode Punished As A Boy pertains to caning a naval soldier across the buttocks instead of the back. In effect like a naughty child.

Tobias Has Signed With New Agents

It seems Tobias has gotten himself some new agents in Hollywood. Deadline reports he’s signed with WME, which is the William Morris Agency. We wish Tobias continued successes as he forges new opportunities through his new representation.

WME Signs ‘The Crown’ Star Tobias Menzies

EXCLUSIVE: Tobias Menzies, one of the breakout stars from the third season of Netflix drama The Crown, has just signed with WME for representation in all areas.

Menzies received a Golden Globe nomination for playing Prince Philip in the royal drama, and will reprise the role in Season 4 of the Left Bank Picture show, which has been in production in the UK.

The British actor’s other television roles have included turns in HBO’s Game Of Thrones, Starz’s Outlander and Amazon’s Catastrophe, while he also appeared in Channel 4/Hulu comedy This Way Up.

On the film side, Menzies has starred in Carmilla for director Emily Harris and Underworld: Blood Wars, opposite Kate Beckinsale, while his theatre work has included Uncle Vanya at London’s Almeida Theatre.

Menzies will continue to be represented by his UK agent Conway van Gelder Grant.

Other notable WME signings this year include actor Robert Downey Jr, his producer wife Susan Downey and their Team Downey banner, and Planet Of The Apes helmer Wes Ball and his Oddball Entertainment partner Joe Hartwick.

“Outlander” – E1X16 To Ransom a Man’s Soul HD Screencaps

Like I did with WENTWORTH PRISON, I’ve included Sam Heughan’s work along with Tobias’. I really do feel it was both Tobias and Sam who made those two episodes what they are. Tobias was positively horrendous as Black Jack Randall, and Sam was heartbreaking as Black Jack brought Jamie down to zero with his torture and rape. This episode also marks a watershed moment in television where male on male rape was so graphically depicted. Full disclosure here: I am a rape victim. I was raped when I was 13 and always felt confused about why my body did what it did during the assault. It wasn’t until years later I heard the body’s response is autonomous of the brain and makes no sense in how it is reacting to rape or sexual gratification. The journey Jamie takes in trying to understand what happened to him was my journey. Trying to figure out was it rape or did I misunderstand what happened and why. Sam Heughan’s bravery in allowing himself to be dragged back to that place for as long as the shoot took is something I’ll always thank him for. His willingness to to it right, not take a cheap shot like Tobias’ other show GAME OF THRONES did so often when the question of rape came up. OUTLANDER has not shied away from the uncomfortable. It shines just as much a glaring eye on the darkness as well as the light with Jamie and Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) romance and their love making. I want to thank Ron D. Moore and Ira Steven Behr for not pulling any punches with either Wentworth Prison or To Ransom A Man’s Soul. For those of us (I’m a woman by the way) who have gone through sexual assault, it was finally good to have it shown for what it is. I would mention the source material in the book written by Diana Gabaldon, but knowing in the book it’s told via first person in that Jamie only relays to Claire what happened it’s not like Jamie having his own agency and actually seeing what happened to Jamie. The only gripe I think I have with the creators is the lack of deleted scenes on the home video release or extended episodes. I’ve listened to the podcast and heard what Ron D. Moore said about what his limit was, however, given what both Tobias and in particular Sam gave to his performance, I think it would have been exceptional to see more of his work.

“Outlander” – E1X15 Wentworth Prison HD Screencaps & Stills

Here is the first of OUTLANDER‘s season one finale. This as well as To Ransom A Man’s Soul I feel are a complete film of sorts. Both are gut wrenching to watch and harrowing to think of what Jamie played so brilliantly by Sam Heughan went through under Black Jack’s darkness. I’m including as much of Sam’s work as possible from both episodes as I feel both Tobias and Sam functioned as a unit to make these episodes without a doubt some of the most amazing work on the small screen. In their dark cat and mouse game Black Jack and Jamie were under Tobias and Sam’s able hands riveting to watch. I hope you agree.

So we’re getting down to the wire on season one. Here we have Lallybroch, where Jamie (Sam Heughan) tells Claire (Caitriona Balfe) the tale of how he came to the attention of Captain Jonathan Wolverton “Black Jack” Randall. Jack and the Redcoats came to Lallybroch, the Fraser family homestead, and attempted to steal horses and food. There they found Jamie’s sister Jenny (Laura Donnelly) who Jack attmpted to rape after switching Jamie. This episode was fraught with drama and story. Great acting all the way around. This is the last for today. I’ll be getting to the last two episodes of season one in the next couple of days. And we all know which two those are…. No stills for this episode. Sorry.

“Outlander” – E1X06 The Garrison Commander HD Screencaps & Stills

Tobias displayed his enormous range as and actor in this OUTLANDER episode, in which I might have gone a bit overboard with the screencaps. Tobias went through so many facial changes as Jack here I had to post more than I likely would have. This might be the trend for the rest of his OUTLANDER tenure. While I adore Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) and Caitriona Balfe (Claire Randall Fraser), Tobias always stuns and provokes with his mesmerizing portrayal of these two characters. The way Tobias revealed Black Jack’s character in his almost sexual pleasure in scourging Jamie was frightening. His description of how he felt as the whip struck Jamie’s back causing the judder up Jack’s arm to “explode” into his chest… Then the ending when Jack made the remark about the “masterpiece” he and “that boy” created….. Only a master can speak words like that and make them come alive off the page.

“Una” HD Screencaps

Tobias kept himself verra (Jamie Fraser reference) busy in 2016. While appearing in OUTLANDER as Black Jack Randall and Frank Randall, also doing double duty on season six of GAME OF THRONES as Edmure Tully, Tobias appeared in an arthouse film called UNA playing the part of Mark. The film starred Ben Mendelsohn and Rooney Mara and told the story of a young woman trying to find out if the man she had sexual relations with as a thirteen year old, remembered her and their experience. While the film is controversial, I feel it missed the boat in giving us a character piece where there are no bad guys, only complicated feelings and showing the human experience. Now before anyone jumps on me and says, “You do realize what Ray/Pete did to Una was rape don’t you?” I’m going to say this, I am a rape survivor. I was raped when I was thirteen, however, I also at fourteen had an affair with a man who was fifty-one. I know both sides, and this was not rape. Una was not shown as a victim of Ray’s. That he was going to bite the bullet and run off with her had a misunderstanding not interfered, I’m sure this film would have been an entirely different one altogether. While Ben Mendelsohn was great in this, I wonder what would have happened had Tobias played Ray/Pete? What type of vibe would he have brought to it. Oh and the film co-stars Tobias’ GAME OF THRONES alum Tara Fitzgerald who played Selyse Baratheon, the wife of Stannis (Stephen Dillane). And funny still Ben Mendelsohn also appeared opposite Riz Ahmed who played Scott, also were Rogue One together as Orson Krennic and Bodhi Rook respectively. Six degrees folks.

“The Terror”: Real Versus Reel

While I’m working on screencapping Tobias’ work on both OUTLANDER and THE TERROR I thought it would be interesting to find out the truth of what happened during the fated Franklin Expedition. Being a huge history buff much like Frank Randall, I really thought some information about the real expedition would be fascinating to post. There is a channel on Youtube called History Buffs. This channel deconstructs films and shows using history or historical facts to either debunk, demystify, or outright blow a hole in these reel versions of real history. I agree with the creator in there was no need to create a monster to haunt and stalk the crew members of The Erebus and The Terror. The conditions in which the men lived were horrific enough, and the depths of the depravity they had to stoop to in order to survive. Dan Simmons’ book was fantastic in its attention to detail, however, writing it more from a historical perspective rather than a fictional one would have been, at least I think, more practical to show what those of the Franklin Expedition went through in terms of those years trying to forge history. Yeah, I’m that much of a nerd. And just like OUTLANDER where I see some things truly lacking in Diana Gabaldon’s writing, I wish Simmons had just written the book and allowed the supernatural elements to rest on that tundra. If anyone is interested in an actual historical film based on fact with no ooga booga please check out the A&E film Shackleton starring Sir Kenneth Branagh and directed by Charles Sturridge. The mini-series is excellent and the production values pre-GAME OF THRONES are exceptional.

Atmospheric first trailer released for Carmilla

Republic Film Distribution has dropped an atmospheric new trailer for the coming-of-age love story ‘Carmilla’.

The film is an atmospheric, coming-of-age love story steeped in eerie mystery; a reimagining of Sheridan La Fanu’s 19th-century novella of the same name. 15-year-old Lara (Hannah Rae) lives with her father (Greg Wise) and her strict governess, Miss Fontaine (Jessica Raine), in total isolation and is struggling to find an outlet for her curiosity and burgeoning sexuality. When a carriage crash nearby brings a young girl into the family home to recuperate, Lara is enchanted by the eponymous Carmilla (Devrim Lingnau).

Emily Harris makes her solo directorial debut, newcomers Hannah Rae and Devrim Lingnau star alongside Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife), Tobias Menzies (The Crown) and Greg Wise (The Crown).

The Victoria and Albert Museum, where writer-director Emily Harris is a Curator of the Theatre and Performance Department, will host a London Premiere screening on 24th March 2020.

A Regional Premiere will take place at the Depot Cinema, Lewes on 31st March 2020. The film was shot on location in and around Lewes and Plumpton, East Sussex.

The film hits cinemas release April 3rd.

I’m sorry it’s been a bit since I posted last, but getting Tobias’ television work capped up is proving to be a bit of a task. I thought I’d post this in hopes it whets your appetite. In CASINO ROYALE, Tobias played the beleaguered Villiers to Dame Judi Dench’s “M”. Not only that poor Villiers had to view a dead body in Solange (Caterina Murino) as James Bond (Daniel Craig) pursued a would-be bomber. All of Tobias’ scenes are with Dame Judi. I’ve also included the opening credits with the song “You Know My Name” written and sung by the late Chris Cornell. The reason for the inclusion is due to Tobias’ name being in the opening credits.

In the last of Tobias’ GAME OF THRONES episodes, Edmure has finally made it out of the Frey dungeon and is now Lord of Riverrun. In his only appearance Edmure takes part in the second Dragon Pit summit to name a new King of The Seven Kingdoms. While it was amazing seeing Tobias again, season eight is a dud for me. “Game of Thrones” Season Six Uploads

Following up on season three’s events, Tobias wasn’t seen on GAME OF THRONES again until season six. Here Edmure had spent years in Walder Frey’s (David Bradley) dungeon having fathered a child on his wedding night. Season six saw The Blackfish (Clive Russell) retake Riverrun from the Freys forcing them to call on the Lannisters to come and take it back. In a pivotal episode Edmure is told by Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) he’ll take drastic measures in the form of sending Edmure’s son over the walls on a catapult if Edmure doesn’t do as he’s told. All in all heartbreaking for Edmure as he ended up back in the Frey dungeon likely still not having seen his son. I find it kind of ironic that as Black Jack Randall on OUTLANDER Tobias tortured Jamie Fraser played by the amazing Sam Heughan, only to be tortured by a Jaime in a Lannister.

Hello & Welcome To Tobias Menzies Online …. Or Late To The Party

Hello and welcome to TOBIAS MENZIES ONLINE a fansite dedicated to the talented actor and activist TOBIAS MENZIES best known for his roles as Edmure Tully on GAME OF THRONES, Frank Randall and Captain Black Jack Randall on the history hopping series OUTLANDER, Captain James Fitzjames in THE TERROR, Marcus Junius Brutus on ROME, Nathaniel Bloom in THE HONOURABLE WOMAN, Geoffrey Dromgoole in THE NIGHT MANAGER and currently being seen as Prince Philip on THE CROWN. The aim of this webiste is to provide the most up-to-date information on Tobias’ career, public appearances, and other things related to his public life.

It is to my shame I didn’t put this site up sooner after first discovering Tobias as Villiers in CASINO ROYALE, and again discovering him as Edmure Tully on HBO’s GAME OF THRONES. However, he came full stop to my attention in the dual roles of Frank Randall and Captain Jonathan Wolverton “Black Jack” Randall on the STARZ show OUTLANDER along with his co-star Sam Heughan, however, there is a sizable site already dedicated to Sam and I didn’t want to step on toes. It was to my shock there were no sites dedicated to Tobias. So this site is it. Please come back often to check out the various things I will be getting up on the site. Which brings me to the fact there’s nothing much up as you can see. I’m hoping to take you along as this site grows. So please keep track of the site on our Twitter account at Tobias Menzies Online On Twitter for any notifications and updates.

Origin Of the Name Menzies

This famous Scottish clan surname, originates from a Norman knight of the 11th century. When William, the Conqueror captured England in 1066, it is said that he received help from Scotland. Certainly a number of Norman nobles and knight received land grants in Scotland. Amongst these was knight called “de Meyners”, originally from the town of Mesnieres, in the department of Seine-Maritime. In England the name is Manners, the family name of the Dukes of Rutland. The place name is a derivative of the Latin “manere”, meaning to remain or reside. The name became prominent in Scotland in the 13th century when Robert de Meyners, was appointed Great Chamberlain of Scotland in the year 1224, by King Robert 1st. Other early recordings include David De Meyness, a knight, and a member of the Queen of Scotland’s retinue in 1248, whilst Robert de Mesnere, was supporter of King Henry 111 of England in 1255. The change to the (near) modern form of Menzies is first recorded in 1385 when Alexander de Meinzeis held a charter of lands in Durisdeer. The book of Menzies written in 1894 claimed descent from King Fergus in 333 B.C. This is a total fable, although it has long been held up as the truth. The Menzies have no need of such rubbish, their success stands for itself. Amongst the many famous name holders is Sir Robert Menzies, (1894 – 1978), the Australian Prime Minister in 1939 – 1941 and again in 1949 – 1966. He had a grandfather who emigrated from Scotland in the gold rush of the 1850’s. and who traced his family back to the Great Chamberlain as shown above. The first recorded spelling of the family name is believed to be that of Arketil de Mannvers, which was dated 1214, and recorded at the Abbey of Holyrood, Scotland. This was during the reign of King Alexander 11 of Scotland, 1214 – 1249″

    FAQ

    Q: Are you Tobias Menzies?

A: No, I am not Tobias Menzies. I am just a resource for his films, television work, …etc.

Q: Do you know how to contact Tobias?

A: No, I don’t know how to contact Tobias.

Q: Can we take any graphics from your site; IE: Sidebar images, page images, etc.?

A: No. What do they mean to anyone outside of this site? They’ve been created for the explicit purpose of staying on this site and this site alone. Headers on both the main site and the gallery are not available for use.

Q: Can we use images from the gallery for artwork?

A: Yes, certainly. No credit needs to be given in this case since you’ll be using the images for your own creations, however, if you’d like to give a shout out to this site, that would be appreciated.

Q: Can we repost any image from the gallery or any video from the media site anywhere we like?

A: Yes, however, don’t say you did it yourself. A lot of work has gone into creating this site as well as the amount of time it takes to screencap each episode of television work and or film. On average it takes about two to three hours depending on the work. I am providing these images for you free of charge, but not free to take and say it’s yours. Please credit back to this site if you’re posting to any message board. Convenient copy and paste codes are available below each image in the gallery for your convenience and it automatically opens the larger image on click. Please be considerate.

    Q: Can I hotlink?

A: No! Hotlinking is not allowed on this site. In fact the webhosting service I use has provided a means by which I can turn off the ability to hotlink…and I have. So don’t do it.

    Q: What is hotlinking?

A: Hotlinking is a way that someone right clicks on an image and choses the Properties dialogue to find out the filename. The person then copies that URL and then puts it on their own webpage but not on a webhost service or a photo storage site such as Photobucket, Imageshare, Picasa, or Flickr. When someone visits the page you have copied the URL into, that clicks as a visit on my site therefore it becomes part of my bandwidth that I pay for. So don’t do it.

    Q: What is bandwidth?

A: Bandwidth is what I pay for on Bravehost services. It is the method that happens when a person clicks onto this site from a search engine or link on another website.

Remember though that anything here is used under FAIR USE and no infringement is intended nor rights implied. I’m sure we can work something out so as not to have to remove anything.

      What is “Fair Use”?

One of the rights accorded to the owner of copyright is the right to reproduce or to authorize others to reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords. This right is subject to certain limitations found in sections 107 through 118 of the copyright law (title 17, U. S. Code). One of the more important limitations is the doctrine of “fair use.” The doctrine of fair use has developed through a substantial number of court decisions over the years and has been codified in section 107 of the copyright law.

Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered fair, such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

      1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
      2. The nature of the copyrighted work
      3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
      4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work
      5. The distinction between fair use and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission.
      6. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.

The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: “quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author’s observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported.”

Copyright protects the particular way authors have expressed themselves. It does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in a work.

The safest course is always to get permission from the copyright owner before using copyrighted material. The Copyright Office cannot give this permission.

When it is impracticable to obtain permission, use of copyrighted material should be avoided unless the doctrine of fair use would clearly apply to the situation. The Copyright Office can neither determine if a certain use may be considered fair nor advise on possible copyright violations. If there is any doubt, it is advisable to consult an attorney.

      The Tribute

I’ve built many fansites over the years since going online in 2001. My first fansite was born in 2006, but very rarely am I compelled to write of my reasons for going to the trouble of purchasing the domain, then going to the extent of beginning the process of screencapping film and television projects, filling the pages within. However, I felt compelled (there’s that word again) to write a tribute of sorts to the focus of this domain. That is Tobias Menzies.

I’m trying to remember the first time I ever saw Tobias, or saw his name. I thought it was on the ending credits of a third season episode of GAME OF THRONES as Edmure Tully, but then I realized it was way before that global phenomenon. It was in 2006 when I went to see the new James Bond film with Daniel Craig, CASINO ROYALE. I realized the young man M, played by the incomparable Dame Judi Dench, was chewing out about Bond’s misdeeds was Tobias Menzies. I just didn’t recall his face when I saw him as Edmure Tully in two significant scenes. The first was when Edmure tried to shoot the flaming arrow into the boat carrying the body of Hoster Tully, Edmure and Catelyn Stark’s (Michelle Fairley) father. The next was when Edmure was being reprimanded by his Uncle Bryndan Tully (Clive Russell), also known as “The Blackfish” for not calling his nephew Robb Stark (Richard Madden) King Robb, and by Robb for losing him 200 men to take a mill. Edmure seemed to be a bit of a milquetoast under Robb and The Blackfish’s dressing down. I thought Tobias’ performance was about as good as one could be considering the limited needs of the character. Then the infamous Red Wedding where Edmure sat out the worst of it in Walder Frey’s (David Bradley) dungeon.

I’d come to GAME OF THRONES predominately for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played The Kingslayer Jaime Lannister. I found and fell in love with Richard Madden along the way. However, Tobias hadn’t really wowed me. I didn’t know whether it was the combination of his character of Villiers in CASINO ROYALE and Edmure that failed to grab me as much as Nikolaj and Richard’s, so I failed to truly grab onto him.

Funny thing first or second impressions are.

I’d been hearing about this show called OUTLANDER during the run of GAME OF THRONES, but I had no interest in anything else at the time. I have fansites for both Richard Madden and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and at the time I was scanning articles to add to the press sections in the gallery and I would see promos, photos, articles and such for OUTLANDER. They depicted Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan as Claire Randall Fraser and Jamie Fraser and read some things on it. It talked of a time traveling woman who jumped from different time periods. I was unaware it was not a Dr. Who like show, though I later heard the impetus for it came from that show. In some of the photos I would see Tobias as mostly Frank Randall dressed in 1940s costume, but nothing of his alter ego Captain Jonathan Wolverton “Black Jack” Randall. So I was really unaware the character existed.

      So where’s this going?

      I’ll tell you.

About a month ago I saw a video on my Youtube homepage with Sam Heughan discussing Jamie’s torture and rape at Black Jack’s hands. It was odd I hadn’t heard anything about it since the topic frequently came up on the many blogs who covered GAME OF THRONES, and particularly with regards to the rape Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) endured at the hands of Ramsey Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and of how it was a disgrace to women in the show’s constant depiction of the abuse of women. I thought the rape scene couldn’t have been that bad if it escaped the same controversy GAME OF THRONES engendered practically every week after an episode aired. Jamie Fraser’s rape slipped under the wire, but Sam discussed the filming and his feelings about it and I thought I’d check it out. So firing up my NETFLIX subscription I began watching. When it came to the final two episodes I found something surprising. That was Tobias Menzies was far more than I gave him credit for.

In the dual roles of Frank and Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, Tobias displayed a deft handling of his craft. How he made the two characters so different from one another. In Frank he gave us a scholar and gentleman. In Black Jack he gave us a scary as hell, pathological monster. With a sniff, movement of the mouth, his quick temper, and his obsession on Jamie made Jack terrifying at the thought someone like that actually exists. With Frank he is stoic, reserved, almost androgynous in his nature. With the exception of one moment where he takes on the extortionists who want to bilk him out of the reward for Claire’s return, Tobias gave small hint as to Frank’s ancestry.

In the small course of a month I began watching most of Tobias’ work. I thought to build a website on Tobias’ OUTLANDER co-star Sam Heughan as I was impressed by his performance as Jamie. However, on a websearch I found a couple of sites for him already. Including Sam Heughan Fan, and as a professional courtosey, decided not to do one. However, I was extremely dismayed there wasn’t one for Tobias. So here it is. A fansite dedicated to the amazing work of Tobias Menzies, an underrated artist with a fearless quality that is finally making people stand up and take notice. I’m just sorry I was late to the party. Tobias deserves all the praise he is currently receving for his role as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in NETFLIX’s THE CROWN. His Golden Globe nomination is a bit late. He should have received many nominations and wins by now for Black Jack Randall. I would also include Sam Heughan for those daring scenes in Wentworth Prison. Those scenes were gut wrenching to watch, but also mesmerizing. The trust both actors showed in each other and the utter talent on display during those grueling scenes was without a doubt some of the best acting I’ve seen in ages. It’s disgusting both men were never recognized for their bravery.

In the character of Black Jack Randall, Tobias was the quintessential villain along the lines of such classic characters of Javert from Les Miserables and Chauvelin in The Scarlet Pimpernell. I doubt we’ll ever get as complex a villain as Black Jack ever again. Most of the ones on television tend to be carbon copies of the others. Tobias went where no other has gone, even on GAME OF THRONES where the villains tend to be a bit campy like the aforementioned Ramsey Bolton and Walder Frey. I think Black Jack is more Marquis de Sade with a hint of Caligula without the insanity because in Black Jack, Tobias played him as strictly real. And within that he gave us perhaps what could be called a villain devoid of the trappings of humanity, but rather that heart of darkness of a Joseph Conrad nightmare. And that takes skill and talent. And that Tobias Menzies has in spades. I fear Diana Gabaldon didn’t see the potential of Black Jack to continue to haunt Jamie Fraser’s dreams. Every good story needs its antagonists for the protagonist to exist. I feel Sam Heughan was at his finest with Tobias as his acting partner. Just that notion Black Jack was out there waiting to see Jamie again made OUTLANDER different from the glut of similar programs. We knew Black Jack would always be there.

As I fill the pages of this site I’m thrilled to see what Tobias does with his career. He’s damned talented and one of those rare talents with an unseen intellect along with that talent that makes him perhaps one of the most intriguing thespians currently on our screens. If Tobias does read this I want to say to him, you are an amazing man and to this I dedicate this fansite. Thank you for opening my eyes to your talent and to your soul.

      TOBIAS MENZIES QUOTES

      • On being drawn into acting after frequently attending theater productions with his mother as a teen – The world seemed bigger, richer, watching things unfold in those rooms. In drama, you see other versions of life: ‘Oh, that’s what it would be like to be that!’ Something obviously was stirring in me.
      • When I started acting, I found a place and a release which I didn’t find in my own life.
      • Regarding working with Keira Knightley in the play, The Children’s Hour – Being around that level of fame has been quite an eye-opener. We went to a girls’ school during rehearsals to work with a drama group. There were 150 children in the playground and they started screaming. I’m sure it wasn’t me! There was a volume and intensity about it that was so peculiar, it was animal. Keira deals with that pretty well. Would I want that? Absolutely not. Then again, do you want recognition that allows you to do the work you want to do? Of course.
      • On the auditioning process – It’s 90 percent humiliation, isn’t it? Just going in and kind of crashing and burning and also doing things that you look back and go, Why on earth was I being seen for that? I was just so wrong. I remember auditioning for Moulin Rouge! (2001), the part that Ewan McGregor played. I was so young, I was literally just out of college. But they were just doing that sort of mass casting, just ring up everyone and put them on tape. And I had to sing and dance and it was just ridiculous. What was I doing in that room? Terrible! I tried so hard, it was so terrible!
      • [On his Outlander (2014) rape scene with Sam Heughan] It was about trying to get the tone right. I was keen for it to be as psychological as possible. I just didn’t want it to feel sensational. If you’re going to have Jack rape Jamie, you have to really earn that, really get to a place where that scene is within the realm of the story. Sam and I didn’t talk a lot [while shooting those scenes]. We would sort of kept to ourselves between shots. But again, one of the good things is how we had been working together for a year so we had a fair amount of trust.
      • I’ve been really lucky to have had a variety of roles, and I don’t think I’m in danger of being typecast as the romantic lead. I think there’s honor in working as constantly as you can. That isn’t easy. And I’m no matinee idol.
      • Comparing the characters he’s portrayed in Rome (2005), Game of Thrones (2011) and Outlander (2014); Brutus was a boy in a man’s world- a study in weakness, moral indecision. Edmure is buffoonish-well-meaning but slightly inept. Frank and Jack are fully capable men but flawed in different ways. They’re both formed by War. Frank has been through the Second World War, and Jack is going through this bloody Jacobite insurgency. One turns to the light, the other turns to the dark.
      • I love small theaters because they’re intimate, and you can have a very easy rapport with the audience. Everyone’s in the same room.
      • On how the cast of the 2011 production of The Children’s Hour with Keira Knightley and Elizabeth Moss loosened up: The cast plays volleyball in the auditorium. We have a piece of rope lengthwise across the seats. We played all through rehearsal so we’ve just kept it up.
      • On the difficulties of portraying the savagery of Black Jack Randall on Outlander (2014) – It would be a lie to say that I go home and shake it off. But it’s what excites me as an actor when I see it and when I manage to do it myself, when there’s lots of shades within the colors of the characters. It’s true to life, isn’t it? Nothing is one thing or the other. Jack is one of life’s interesting contradictions. He does have some personal insight, he gets people and how they work but he chooses to abuse those rather than comfort them or reassure them.
      • On playing the romantic lead in Forget Me Not (2010), a romantic comedy with a dark tinge; I’ve not played a romantic lead before and it did feel like uncharted territory, but it’s a very small film so I don’t think this is going to make me a superstar.
      • Do I think the West End relies too heavily on star names? Yes, I do, and it can result in miscasting and sub-standard stuff. Not always, but occasionally.
      • I’m largely interested in people who are just great actors, and they’re not necessarily hugely famous.
      • I live or die by how well I act.
      • I love haggis. Haggis, neeps, and tatties.
      • I wouldn’t be seen dead in a kilt.
      • On filming in Scotland – It is just an incredibly beautiful country. I’ve had the luck through filming to be taken to amazingly beautiful bits of it and allowed to just hang out in those places. The few times that the rain has stopped and the sun does come out, it is God’s own country. That’s been a pleasure. We’ve been basing ourselves in Glasgow, and there are very warm people here and we’ve been very welcomed. It’s been one of the real bonuses of this job to get to hang out here.
      • On his Outlander (2014) look as Black Jack Randall – I wear a wig to play Jack, and I remember on my first day of filming him, I spent my whole day trying to blow and push wisps of hair out of my face without ruining takes. Never had long hair before. It seemed like a total nightmare. I could just never get the hair totally out of my face, it was distracting. The 1740s costumes are very constraining. You’re very, very conscious of what you’re wearing at all times compared to how we dress now. Trying to get on and off horses with long swords was also interesting, especially trying to make it look like you’ve done it many times before.
      • [on fandom on Outlander (2014) and Game of Thrones (2011)] I think it is essentially a creative and fun dialogue between the fans who feel ownership over this material and the people who are making it. I’m all for that. Personally, I don’t troll through the forums and try to steer clear because there is enough pressure on you already. And I suppose you want to come to it as unaffected as possible. But it is a great benefit to have such a large and rich group of people who are enthusiastic about it and who are looking forward to it. That’s definitely a positive.
      • [On a role he’d like to portray in the future] I don’t think the show ever played in America, but there was a famous bandit, a highwayman, in England, called Dick Turpin (1979). When I was a kid there was a show about the adventures of this highwayman. I remember being obsessed by him. So I wouldn’t mind having a go at Dick Turpin.
      • [On what meal he’d cook for a romantic dinner] Oooh… I think it might have to be just a very delicious, very classic Italian type of dish – a carbonara. When I was working on the show, Rome (2005) in Rome the main lesson I learned from eating out there is they have very little amounts of sauce – amazing sauce – but they use small quantities, an amazing bottle of wine, and a salad. I’m a bit of a rabbit. I love an amazing salad.
      • [On his favorite pastime/hobby] Tennis. Playing tennis. I spent most of my childhood on a tennis court. It was my grand passion.
      • [On his favorite TV show] favorite all time is The Wire (2002). It’s a great piece of storytelling in recent times. I’m watching Wolf Hall (2015). I’ve heard tell and have meant to catch up on Transparent (2014).
      • [on his favorite song/band] It might have to be Neil Young, “Old Man.”
      • [on playing Black Jack Randall on Outlander (2014) ] I never regarded Black Jack as someone who didn’t have tender feelings somewhere.
      • [on why he wanted to be part of Outlander (2014)] Because it is incredibly bold, goes to a rich array of places, and the characters are very vivid. There is a strong female audience, but I think it has quite broad appeal. It has everything in it. It has time travel, adventure, history, romance, battles. I imagine if we get it right, it will have something for everyone and be unlike anything else. It is a big genre buster. It crosses a lot of different streams.
      • [It seems fitting for the kinds of characters you’re attracted to, in which you take these people and really humanize them, warts and all.] That’s what’s interesting about humans, we’re always a massive contradiction. There’s a lot more to everyone, isn’t there? What I’m interested in doing is making the character more three-dimensional, big or small, because that’s what’s both great and infuriating about people. Everyone has a family. Everyone comes from somewhere. So it’s harder to demonize someone when you see them with their family, as you do with Black Jack in this most recent episode. You have to engage with Jack the sibling, which is always complicated. That’s one of the benefits of doing a television drama over a long period of time -you get to explore these little contradictions. And one of the benefits of doing the TV show from the books is we can fill in the gaps, and color in more of the characters.
      • [I heard a story about how you first decided to become an actor, and it involved a trip to the bathroom?] [Laughs.] Yeah, really early on, when I was young, we went and saw a production of The Wind in the Willows in a theater. At the intermission, I went to the toilet, and in the urinal next to me was the actor playing Badger. I didn’t quite know why he was in the urinal meant for the audience, and not backstage, I’m not quite sure about that, but there was something thrilling about seeing someone I had looked up to on the stage, and then seeing him beside me having a piss. There was something really about that which stayed with me. It seemed a little bit of magic in a way, this sort of mythical figure breaking through and just being there. And that was the first time I engaged with the idea of wanting to be an actor, and also being a person.
      • [When asked which historical figure’s he like to hook-up with, Tobias Menzies didn’t even think twice before saying Marilyn Monroe] She seemed like the most gorgeous, sex kitten-ish, bundle of joy.
      • [Regarding Black Jack Randall’s explosive and controversial anger after the death of his brother on Outlander (2014)] In the script we had the brother die. We have the death scene of the brother, and [writer Ira Steven Behr] had Jack break down. We were working on it and working on it and filming it, but in a way I felt like everyone’s seen that scene, and it felt a little bit clichéd, arguably. We want to see his emotion, but in a way that’s odder, and so we actually ended up shooting a version where the brother dies, and you see that land with Jack and then Jack beats the body of the brother with his fists. He takes out his rage and loss in violence. Right at the end is a very vivid flash of who Jack is, and who we haven’t seen in the episode.
      • [on working with the writers on Rome (2005)] I had a lot of involvement with the script process and obviously as an actor I would say I found that beneficial. You know what feels or sounds believable, and that sort of veritas is often missing from TV dramas. Scripts can be slick and structured, but do they always contain the truth?
      • [Regarding his costumes for Rome (2005)] I’m not sure that I had the legs for togas. I think James Purefoy had the best legs, good calves. I’m not sure I ever want togas to come back into fashion.
I find life hard. Bruising, curious, disappointing at times, amazing at times. You have more life experience, and you get more beaten up along the way. I find it a bumpy ride. I know lots of other people find it funner than I do.

      Biography

Hanan Tobias Simpson Menzies (born 7 March 1974) is an English stage, television and film actor. He is best known for his dual roles of Frank and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall in STARZ’s Outlander, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination, in addition to his roles as Brutus in HBO’s Rome and Edmure Tully in HBO’s Game of Thrones. He next appeared as William Elliot in ITV’s production of Jane Austen’s classic Persuasion, and Derrick Sington in Channel 4’s feature length drama The Relief of Belsen, which chronicled the British liberation of Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp at the end of WWII. In 2008, Menzies starred in two stylistically different mini-series. The first was BBC’s anthology mini-series Fairy Tales, in an episode entitled The Empress’s New Clothes, where he portrayed Aidee. Second was the series finale of BBC’s Bonekickers, which followed a team of British archaeologists as they investigated mysteries and conspiracy theories surrounding historical artifacts. The next year saw Menzies return to episodic television with roles in ITV’s legal drama Kingdom, alongside Stephen Fry, a special episode of BBC’s comedy Pulling, and several episodes of BBC One’s spy drama Spooks.

The Deep, BBC’s 2010 science fiction-thriller mini-series set on submarines in the deep waters below Arctic ice, saw Menzies co-star alongside Minnie Driver and James Nesbitt. That same year he portrayed real-life Naval Intelligence officer Ian Fleming in PBS’s mini-series Any Human Heart, an adaptation of William Boyd’s 2012 novel which chronicled historical events through fictional protagonist Logan Mountstuart. He would go on to feature in a series four episode of ITV’s Law & Order: UK, a British adaptation of Dick Wolf’s long-running American procedural franchise. In 2011, Menzies featured as tabloid journalist Ross McGovern in BBC Two’s seven part mini-series The Shadow Line, opposite Stephen Rea and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The next year, in ITV’s supernatural courtroom drama Eternal Law, Menzies portrayed a fallen angel who had become a prosecuting attorney in York, England. He would go on to feature in an episode of BBC Two’s political satire The Thick of It, an episode of Channel 4’s political thriller mini-series Secret State, three episodes of BBC’s medical satire Getting On, and two episodes of BBC’s Shakespearean documentary Simon Schama’s Shakespeare.

In 2013 Menzies first appeared as Edmure Tully, the heir to House Tully of Riverrun, in HBO’s Game of Thrones, which was based upon George R. R. Martin’s fantasy book series. The role was recurring, with Menzies’ final appearance occurring in the 2019 series finale. That same year, Menzies starred in the series two finale of Channel 4’s anthology series Black Mirror, and a two episode stint on BBC’s long-running crime drama Silent Witness. 2014 saw Menzies portray Maggie Gyllenhaal’s bodyguard, Nathaniel Bloom, in the BBC’s Emmy nominated mini-series The Honourable Woman, and Alexander in the series premier of BBC’s dog training comedy Puppy Love. The same year, Menzies first appeared in Starz’s time travel drama series, Outlander, which is based upon author Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling series of novels.[44] He portrayed the recurring dual roles of Frank Randall, a 20th-century historian, and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, his brutal 18th-century ancestor. From 2015 to 2019, Menzies appeared in the recurring role of Dr. Harries, OB/GYN to lead character Sharon, in Amazon’s original series Catastrophe.

BBC One’s adaptation of John le Carré’s espionage novel The Night Manager saw Menzies, opposite Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, in the role of British intelligence director Geoffrey Dromgoole in the spring of 2016. That same year he starred in Channel 4’s series pilot The Circuit, a comedy set at a neighborhood dinner party. In 2017, in his first voice over work on television, Menzies portrayed Mandalorian warrior Tiber Saxon on Disney XD’s animated series Star Wars Rebels. It was announced in 2016 that Menzies had been cast as James Fitzjames, Captain of the Royal Navy vessel Erebus, in AMC’s anthology series The Terror. The series, based upon Dan Simmons’ 2007 novel of the same name, chronicled a fictionalized account of real-life expeditionary ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror during the third Franklin Expedition of the Arctic in 1848.[52][53] That same year he appeared as the Duke of Cornwall in BBC Two’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear, opposite Anthony Hopkins and Emily Watson.

In March 2018 it was announced that Menzies had been cast to portray Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in seasons three and four of Netflix’s hit series The Crown, opposite Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II. Menzies was announced, in June of 2019, as a cast member for the Channel 4/Hulu original series This Way Up, a comedy set around the life of an English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) teacher, from actress and writer Aisling Bea.

      FILM

Menzies’ first professional film role was 2000’s dramatic comedy The Low Down, opposite Aidan Gillen, which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival.[59] His next role, in Miramax’s 2004 biographical drama Finding Neverland, saw Menzies feature opposite Johnny Depp’s J.M. Barrie, the creator of beloved children’s character Peter Pan.[60] The next year, Menzies appeared in the romantic comedy Piccadilly Jim, opposite Sam Rockwell, and director Adrian Shergold’s drama Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman, opposite Timothy Spall. He also featured in Casino Royale, Columbia Pictures’ 2006 reboot of the James Bond film franchise, as personal aide to M, chief of British secret intelligence agency Mi6.

In 2007, Menzies portrayed a Naval officer on the beaches of Normandy, opposite James McAvoy, in the Academy Award nominated adaptation of Ian McEwan’s WWII drama Atonement. The Rose Theatre, an Elizabethan theatre outside London, produced a short video which was shown in 2009, and featured Menzies in the role of Mephistophilis, in Christopher Marlow’s play Doctor Faustus. He would go on to appear in three films in 2010. The first was Independent Pictures’ adaptation of Russian author Anton Chekhov’s The Duel, where he portrayed Von Koren. Second was Swipe Films’ production of Jackboots on Whitehall, an animated film featuring puppets.[68] Menzies, alongside Alan Cumming and Timothy Spall, provided voice work for the comedy spoof, which explored the idea of Nazis invading the United Kingdom at the end of WWII. In his third film of 2010, Menzies starred opposite Genevieve O’Reilly in the drama Forget Me Not, an independent film which premiered at the Culver Plaza Theater in Los Angeles.

Dramatic comedy Hysteria (2011) featured Menzies, opposite Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy, in the story of the creation of the first Victorian era vibrator. That same year he would feature in writer Andrew Steggall’s short film The Door, an official selection at the 28th annual Warsaw International Film Festival, which was based upon the tale The Door in the Wall by H.G. Wells. In 2012, Menzies starred in director Carrie Cracknell’s Nora, a short film inspired by the Young Vic’s theatrical production of Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House. His next film was 2014’s thriller The Birthday Gift, a short film which was screened at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival that year. Menzies would go on to star in the short film/micro-play Groove is in the Heart, a collaboration between the Royal Court Theatre and The Guardian which was screened at the London Film Festival, and submarine action film Black Sea, a modern-day pirate thriller, opposite Jude Law.

2016 saw Menzies feature in three films. First was director Benedict Andrews’ forbidden relationship drama Una, which was based upon the play Blackbird from Scottish playwright David Harrower, followed by filmmaker James Hughes’ experimental film The Velvet Abstract, which saw Menzies provide narration. Last was Underworld: Blood Wars, the fifth installment in the Underworld franchise, with Menzies starring as the main antagonist, Marius, opposite Kate Beckinsale’s Selene.[82]

In August 2017 it was announced that Menzies had been cast in director Emily Harris’ adaptation of Carmilla, a fantasy film based upon the Gothic novella of the same name by Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu.

      THEATRE

Menzies’ theatrical debut was in Hristo Boytchev’s comedy The Colonel Bird, which ran at The Gate London in 1999.[85] The next year, he featured in The Royal Exchange’s presentation of The Way of the World, a production of playwright William Cosgreve’s 1700’s grandiloquent play of manners and Complicite theatre company’s Light, an adaptation of author Torgny Lindgren’s novel Ljuset (1987). In late 2001, Menzies appeared in Almeida Theatre’s production of Anton Checkhov’s play Platonov, an adaptation of the early, unnamed play that was Checkhov’s first large scale drama. The next year he portrayed Valentine in the Royal Theatre’s production of Tom Stoppard’s tragic comedy Arcadia.

Between 2003 and 2005, Menzies would co-star in the anti-war drama Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance at the Everyman Theatre, and would portray the young teacher Irwin in Alan Bennett’s The History Boys, which Nicholas Hytner directed at the Royal National Theatre.[93][94] Of his role in The History Boys, one reviewer wrote:

There is a remarkable performance, too, from Tobias Menzies as the slick supply-teacher historian, who believes academic success is merely a matter of tricks and spin. But Menzies also discovers a surprisingly attractive vulnerability in the character I missed the first time around.
      — Charles Spencer, The Telegraph

He would go on to star in Michael Blakemore’s West End production of Three Sisters, for which he was nominated for the Ian Charleson Award, and the title role in Rupert Goold’s production of Hamlet, at the Royal Theatre, Northampton. Of his role in Hamlet, one reviewer wrote:

One of Shakespeare’s greatest innovations was to dramatise people’s thought processes: the articulation of the mind’s search for meaning and identity. This is where Menzies’ performance is most thrilling. He shows how language strives to express the self and to pin down the truth. Who am I? What do I think and feel? Menzies’ delivery of the “To be or not to be…” speech burns with intelligence. This is one of the finest and most exciting Hamlets I’ve seen. Observe his face: it seems to mature, grow softer, more observant and expressive, and his death becomes a fulfilment as well as a failure
      — John Peter, The Sunday Times

Menzies took on a supporting role in Playhouse Theatre’s 2006 presentation of Pirandello’s play As You Desire Me.[98] The next year he would feature in two productions. First was the role of Peter Trifimov in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, followed by a turn as Harry Bagley in Almeida Theatre’s production of Caryl Churchill’s politically sexual comedy Cloud Nine. Late 2008 saw Menzies portray Edgar opposite Pete Postlethwaite in Liverpool Playhouse’s production of King Lear, which continued with a run at London’s Young Vic Theatre in early 2009.

In 2011, Menzies featured as Dr. Joseph Cardin, opposite Keira Knightley’s Karen Wright, in Lillian Hellman’s 1934 drama The Children’s Hour, which focuses on the harmful effects of wrongful accusations and rumors. He would go on that same year to star in director Rupert Goold’s Decade, a play presented through a series of short vignettes penned to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. George Farquhar’s 1706 play The Recruiting Officer, which was based upon the methods used by the British Army to recruit troops during the War of Spanish Succession, saw Menzies star as Captain Plume during the first quarter of 2012. The next year he would feature in director Carey Cracknell’s Rough Cuts: Searched, at the Royal Court Theatre, and star in National Theatre’s experimental play The Hush, which explored the connection between sound and memory.

Wallace Shawn’s monologue play The Fever, which explored the main character’s internal struggle with the morality of a privileged existence, saw Menzies perform to a micro audience at London’s decadent May Fair Hotel in early 2015.[108] Director Robert Icke purposely staged the play, produced by Almeida Theatre, at the May Fair Hotel in order to assist the small audience to better internalize its meaning.[109] That same year he would join an extensive cast for a sixteen hour production of Homer’s The Iliad, performed throughout the day at the British Museum and concluding at the Almeida Theatre, as well as being broadcast live.[110] Working again with director Robert Ickes, 2016 would see Menzies star in a modernized interpretation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya prior to performing dramatic readings of selected sonnets by Shakespeare in Middle Temple Hall’s choral programme The Dark Lady and the Tender Churl. Two years later, Menzies would return to the Almeida in their digital theatre production Figures of Speech, which highlighted performances of well known historical speeches. He appeared in series three of the project, which has featured artists such as Ian McKellan, Fiona Shaw, and Andrew Scott.[113]

Early 2019 saw Menzies appear in the Gate Theatre’s production of Sarah Ruhl’s Dear, Elizabeth. The play, which dramatized letters between American poets Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell, featured two different actors each night of the show’s run. Later that year, Menzies starred in Almeida Theatre’s production of The Hunt, which was set in Denmark and adapted from 2012’s thriller film Jagten (The Hunt). The production ran from mid June to early August 2019. His performance garnered positive reviews, with one saying:

Tobias Menzies’s performance as Lucas is finely controlled — a quietly devastating portrait of a man whose lonely fight to preserve his dignity takes him to the brink of madness.
      — Henry Hitchings, Evening Standard

      RADIO

Menzies’ first professional radio performance was 2010’s drama A Nice Little Holiday, the story of British playwright John Osborne’s 1961 besieged holiday in the South of France, which aired on BBC Radio 4 in September of that year. The next year he would read an abridgement of Matthew Hollis’ biography of poet and literary critic Edward Thomas, best known for his poem Adelstrop, on BBC Radio 4’s series Book of the Week. In his third collaboration with BBC Radio 4, Menzies was the voice of John Charrington’s Wedding (2012), the second episode of a five-part series titled Ghost Stories of E Nesbit.[120] 2013’s three-part radio drama, commissioned by BBC Radio 4, saw Menzies portray British writer and National Trust supporter James Lees-Milne, opposite Victoria Hamilton as novelist Nancy Mitford. The series consisted of three interconnected plays, based upon his WWII era journals, cataloging the decline of the English country house and titled Sometimes into the Arms of God, The Unending Battle, and What England Owes. That same year he would star in BBC Radio 3’s drama Serious Money, adapted for radio by Emma Harding from Caryl Churchill’s play of the same name, and BBC Radio 4’s political drama Every Duchess In England, based upon Parliament’s response to England’s financial crisis of 1931.[124][125]

In 2014, Menzies featured in a five-part series for BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week where he read Laurie Lee’s As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning, an account of her travels in 1930’s Spain, in sections released over a five day period.[126] He would go on the next year to star as Andy Warhol in Sarah Wooley’s BBC Radio 4 drama Fifteen Minutes, opposite Adrian Rawlins, and a second five-part Book of the Week series where he, along with the author, would read british travel writer Robert Macfarlane’s celebration of language, Landmarks.[127][128] 2016 would see Menzies in another series which combined literary readings and music in an episode of BBC Radio 3’s Words and Music series entitled Trapped. The episode explored both physical and mental entrapment with readings, including authors such as George Orwell and Charlotte Bronte, by both Menzies and Kate Phillips. He would also feature in BBC Radio 4’s Comment Is Free, a political and social commentary focusing on a wife, portrayed by Rachael Stirling, who is forced to watch both the public and media eviscerate her husband’s story.

Once again reading for BBC radio 4’s series Book of the Week, Menzies narrated author Philip Hoare’s exploration of our fascination with water and the sea in 2017’s five-part RISING TIDE FALLING STAR.
